Wake Us Up When September Ends

As Green Day sings, “Summer has come and passed.” Another month has passed as well, which means we are here with a round-up of all things pop culture and news-related that you might have missed.

2023 US Open
This year’s US Open saw new and returning tennis superstars win Major titles. Novak Djokovic made history with his 24th Grand Slam trophy and became the oldest man to win the US Open. With his win, Djokovic tied Margaret Court for the most Major singles titles ever. Newcomer Coco Gauff also earned her first major title and became the youngest American—male or female—to win the title since Serena Williams did it in 1999 at 17 years old.

MTV Video Music Awards
On September 12, Nicki Minaj hosted The MTV Video Music Awards. To no surprise, the biggest winner of the night was Taylor Swift who walked away with nine awards including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year. In addition, the show honored Shakira with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, given to artists for outstanding contributions and profound impacts on music videos and popular culture

WGA Reaches a Tentative Agreement
After nearly 150 days, the Writers Guild of America and major film and television studios reached a tentative deal that paved a path forward to end the standoff that has frozen production and paralyzed Hollywood. In an email to its members on Sunday, the WGA stated, “What we have won in this contract—most particularly, everything we have gained since May 2nd—is due to the willingness of this membership to exercise its power, to demonstrate its solidarity, to walk side-by-side, to endure the pain and uncertainty of the past 146 days.” While a tentative agreement has been reached, no one who is part of the union can return to work until the union authorizes it. Instead, they are now encouraging members to join the actors on the picket line to bring an end to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
