Can you believe 2019 is almost over?! We certainly cannot. 2019 was a year full of ads: the good, the bad, and the ugly. What better way to ring in the New Year with a blog full of all of our favorite ads from 2019. Here’s to hoping 2020’s are just as fantastic!

Harry Potter, Times Square, & Immersive Theatre


The producers of Broadway’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child partnered with AKA NYC to put on a giant Times Square takeover.

Change Up the Usual

Two iconic characters came together, encouraging viewers to reach for a Stella. The Queen of New York and The Dude

2020 Corolla: “Rainy Day” Toyota

The twist is directly related to the product, and creates a misdirection tied directly to the product’s benefit. You think the car wash attendants are gawking at the car (which is new and stylish), but they’re actually staring in shock at what is revealed to be a young couple doing, uh, *something* in the back seat. It’s a fun surprise contrasted to a traditional car commercial, gives us opportunities to show some cool shots of the car’s shape, slowly concealing/revealing it with the car wash so we notice all the small details. Then when we get the twist, we see cool young people being happy in this car, which creates a positive emotional connection to this car, and a desire to see yourself in their position, laughing and smiling and having fun.

Calvin Klein celebrated 50 years of unfiltered self-expression with the new CK50 capsule collection. The ad features star such as Justin and Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner, A$SP Rocky, Troye Sivan, and more.

Painfully Accurate Spotify Ads

This U.K. campaign celebrates the contrasts of being Gen X, or the so called “Forgotten Generation.” Spotify is currently running one of its best outdoor campaigns aimed squarely at teens of the ’80s and ’90s.

Eat Like Andy

Burger King reverse engineered Andy Warhol’s art technique by turning his art into a TV commercial on the biggest mass consumption day of America, the Super Bowl.

Cooking Together

The Amazon Echo Commercial, the daughter is cooking dinner for an upcoming meal and she’s on a call with her father who is helping her make it. The viewer thinks they are together, but it pans out to show he’s helping her through the Amazon Echo Device. It’s so cute!

We Will Win

Microsoft is committed to building accessible technology, and they went above and beyond with the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Young gamers are rising to the top of their friends, family and Microsoft. It shows happy, fun, amazing children with disabilities who still love the community and culture behind playing video games.
