I recently found a show that I really love on Netflix called “Get Organized with The Home Edit.” It’s about two women who started a business to help people organize their lives. They have a system for organizing that just works. This show made me realize how important organization is and how it can make such a big impact. It affects not only a space, but your experience in the space, improves efficiency, and takes out unnecessary stress.

Organization is a skill that comes naturally to some people, but not everyone. I think there are a few things that anyone can implement to improve their organization, as well as improve their lives. There are many different ways to organize in your life, and the secret is creating habits that bring success and are sustainable for you.

  • Write Things Down, Make Lists

Prioritize your lists by importance. I am someone who likes to make lists…for just about everything. I feel like I will forget it if I don’t write it down somewhere. Each day, I have a list of goals I try to complete that day. Prioritizing your lists by order of importance is great because it will help you to focus on one thing at a time, as well as complete the most pressing tasks first.

  • Plan Ahead and Schedule

This goes hand in hand with making lists. Planning ahead and scheduling is helpful when viewing your week or month at a glance. This will aid in time management and prevent overbooking yourself.

  • Simplify

Simplify your life. It sounds obvious, but often, letting go of items and clutter can be hard. Thoughts of possibly needing those things in the future may arise. But, if you haven’t used an item in over 6 months, or even thought about using it, you probably don’t need it. Simplifying your life doesn’t just apply to material items. This also goes for things like your phone (photo albums, applications, emails, etc.). Cleaning up your phone really makes a difference and shifts your phone back to being a useful tool.

  • Give Everything a Home

Once you have simplified the items in your space, the time comes to give them an organized home. Storage containers and organization tools are very helpful when doing this. It is useful to think about storing items in a way that makes sense by categorizing and creating clear spaces for different categories of items.

  • Develop Good Habits and build a routine

Once all of these things have been implemented, it’s just as important to continue these good habits to keep your space organized.

  • Declutter on a Regular Basis

One way to keep up an organized space is to frequently de-clutter. This can be as simple as straightening up your room every few days, as well as going through your closet every season. An organized space leaves room to relax and decompress.

  • Find Balance

Finally, find a balance that works for you. There is no one correct way to organize your space, it is best to find what works best for you and roll with that!
