Things I’ve Learned in my First 8 Months

Starting a new job is always an exciting experience, especially when your new job involves the cool kids (and dogs) at ANDERSON. Transitioning to a smaller agency setting than I’m used to definitely came with a learning curve, but the process has been quite insightful. I’ve learned a lot in these past eight months and it’s been a fun experience!

Be Flexible

At some point, all creatives ask the same question: “The client wants it when?” Being able to turn on a dime is a skill you learn very quickly at an agency. Deadlines come in all forms, from months to days to hours—even minutes. Sometimes it’s sink or swim. Managing your available time is crucial to success. Especially with the quick turnaround projects, working highly efficiently is key.

Keep an Open Mind

Clients often come in with their own set of ideas and expectations. In these instances, it can be hard to feel creative. Keeping an open mind about what they want vs. what you would rather do can lead to some pretty creative solutions. It highlights your expertise while also showing the client that you are listening to them. Sometimes, this can lend a whole new perspective. They did hire you for a reason after all!

Flexing Your Skills

Small means nimble. And nimble means you think on your feet. I’ve learned to use not only the skills I’ve been honing for years but also to embrace the chance to learn new ones. Lately, I’ve been playing with different design programs. It’s been a great way to flex my creative brain. Expanding my knowledge only makes projects better and enhances what I bring to the table for our clients.

Small But Mighty

More streamlined shops offer something the bigger ones simply can’t: Unparalleled focus and responsiveness. All of our team members are 100% in-sync with every project and every client—every day. Around here, it’s an “all hands on deck” mentality. I am still amazed by how much we can get done in a week! It’s a true team effort (and it really helps that we genuinely like each other). Determination, collaboration and talent are absolute requirements at ANDERSON.

Schedule Time for Fun

As busy and crazy as agency life can be, always remember to have fun! Even if it means adding events to the company calendar, taking the time to socially connect is key to the team vibe. Especially in a remote environment, connecting with coworkers and checking in with each other builds camaraderie. It’s good for a better team bond as well as getting the creative juices flowing!
